what is royal jelly good for and how to take it

What is royal jelly good for and how to take it.

Royal jell is the most valuable bee product, yet we still don’t know what it is good for and how to take it. People all over the world have heard of its incredible health benefits but are still not sure when to use it and how. Here are some of the conditions which showed improvements and even complete healing after treatment with royal jelly.

In the past the unanimously accepted daily dose was of 0.2 g, and the administration was mostly in the form of pills with royal jelly lyophilized (dry) or preserved in various forms. But these days, some well-known scientists, such as Shoei Furukawa and Noriko Hattori from Japan, Stefan Bogdanof from Switzerland and Cristina Aosan from Romania, have considered it to be underdosed and changed it.

Studies reported that royal jelly was successfully administered,  without any side effects, in dosages starting from 1 g to 5 g or more.

On our market, royal jelly can be found fresh (raw), as softgels (as lyophylised powder) or mixed in honey (fresh or lyophylised).

If you don’t know exactly what royal jelly is, please read the page Royal jelly and Royal Jelly health benefits.

Which is the most efficient form of taking royal jelly?

Besides changing the dose, researchers have also changed the best way to ingest it. Thus it was observed that royal jelly freeze-dried or preserved in various forms gives incomparably weaker results compared to fresh raw royal jelly.

Bulgarian study made on 17 different samples of royal jelly, showed that “the content of proteins was higher in fresh RJ than in commercial samples and this difference was significant.”

But while it may sound the easiest way to manufacture a commercial product, after all it’s royal jelly directly got out from the hive, things are not that easy. Fresh royal jelly should be frozen as soon as harvested, as this is the only way to prevent decomposition of biologically active proteins.

After harvest, the validity of royal jelly is:
– 3 to 5 days inside the hive,
– only a few minutes outsides the hive in a temperature of 15-25º C
– 6 months, if it is refrigerated (3º to 5º C)
– 2 years if it is stored in the freezer (below -18º C)

Which is the recommended dose of fresh royal jelly?

A recommended dose ranges from 1 to 5 g per day, taken in the course of 30-90 days, followed by 10-30 days break.
There are cases when higher doses are needed, but for shorts periods and with longer breaks between them. Royal jelly should be taken on an empty stomach, with at least a quarter of an hour before eating.

recommended dose for royal jelly

The dose is nevertheless adjusted for each individual, according to body weight and physical condition. Here are some specific situations:

Osteoporosis

In order to prevent osteoporosis, after the age of 45, people can take royal jelly twice a year for periods of 30 to 60 days. The daily dose should be of 1 g. Royal jelly stimulates and supports ovarian activity, favoring estrogen secretion, the hormone involved in the direct assimilation of calcium.

Postmenopausal syndrome

In a study done in 2004 under the leadership of dr. D. Georgiev from the Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Sofia, Bulgaria, 55 women already in menopause had 0.5-1 g royal jelly per day for a period of 90 days. Complete clinical investigations and analyzes were made before and after, and the results were more than promising.
Specific symptoms of post-menopausal syndrome such as cardiac disorders, osteoporosis, circulatory disorders, atrophic vaginitis, were diminished or even gone. Depression and fatigue were also improved.

Cancer

10-HDA (ie 10-hydroxy acid 2-decenoic), a compound of royal jelly, has shown exceptional effects of preventing and treating cancer. This 10-DHA prevents the vascularization of tumors, thus preventing their proliferation and growth.

1 to 3 courses of treatment are recommended per year, lasting for 60 days, with 1 gram of fresh royal jelly per day. During this period keep a vegetarian diet, in order to make a favorable background for the anti-tumor action of this substance.

Fresh royal jelly is mostly recommended in prostate cancer, as besides having an anti-tumor effect it also has a hormone regulating action, which is very important for this type of cancer.

Atherosclerosis

Clinical trials and experimental medicine made by doctor James Vittek College of Medicine, New York, Section of Endocrinology, in 1995, showed that a course of royal jelly for 30-60 days lowers cholesterol and triglycerides.
Therefore 1 or 2 grams are recommended to be taken daily for at least 30 days (maximum 60), 3 times per year.

Myocardial infarct

Royal jelly has a powerful antioxidant effect and prevents plaque formation, also having hypotensive and vasodilator effects. People with heart problems should do, especially in periods of intense stress, a treatment with royal jelly, in the course of 60 days and take 2 g per day on an empty stomach, to prevent myocardial infarction.

Flue, colds

RJ has a direct antiviral effects, stimulating the production of immune cells and activating the existing ones. A short course is recommended, with 2 to 4 grams of RJ for 7 days.
It is an excellent prophylactic therapy, especially in epidemic seasons.

Senile dementia

Three times a year one should keep courses of 60 days, with 2 g of RJ daily. This treatment is especially recommended from the age of 50, when the nervous system begins to be more intensely affected by degenerative processes.

Multiple sclerosis, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease and Charcot)

Absolutely amazing results have been obtained by a Romanian physician after the administration of 8-10 g of RJ, along with other bee products, for 7 days, followed by 4 weeks of break. Then resume the treatment.

Depression or depressive-anxious states

Royal jelly has antidepressant effects and is considered to be more powerful than Hypericum perforatum, known as (perforate) St John’s-wort. Patients regularly taking RJ gradually regain mental and physical appetite, sleep returns to normal and asthenic conditions disappear.
Scientists still do not know the exact mechanism of action of this bee product, but most researchers tend to believe that, under its action, the cortex begins to secrete and release, in sufficient quantities in the body, neurotransmitters that induce feelings of optimism and psycho-mental tone.
Courses are held for 30 days, during which one should take 2 to 4 g of raw royal jelly daily, then have a break of 1-2 weeks, then the treatment can be resumed.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

One should start with a lower dose, of 1 gram per day and increase it to 3 grams, during a 3 months period. Maximum two treatments are recommended per year (in the beginning and at the end of the year), each with a duration of 3 months. Royal jelly is one of the most powerful natural energizer, helping to regain work capacity, improving some cognitive functions (such as attention, concentration, memory) and normalizing sleep.

Drug addiction

The efficiency of royal jelly has recently been discovered in this area, the results surprising the doctors.
First a dose-shock of 25 g is needed. This usually triggers the disappearance of acute symptoms (tremors, psychomotor agitation, mental incoherence etc.).
Then RJ should be administered in smaller doses of 2-5 g daily (start with 5 g and decrease this dose in time to 2 g) for three months.
Royal jelly offers a tremendous benefit in detoxification and elimination of full drug dependency. Although there are little known about the mechanisms of how it works, the obvious results show that it does works somehow.

Alzheimer’s disease

Royal jelly has a high content of acetylcholine, a substance essential for the transmission of nerve impulses. Recent research made in Japan have shown that RJ stops degenerative processes of the central nervous system and even helps restoring damaged cells.

Per year a patient should keep 6 periods of treatment (courses). Each course should have 10 days with 5-10 g of royal jelly daily. Between courses there must be breaks of 20 days.

Hepatitis

Daily administration of royal jelly gave very good results in treating this disease, whether acute, chronic or chronic-progressive. The best effects were observed in viral hepatitis (A, B, C, etc.) where after the treatment the results showed a growth of the albumin/globulin ratio, lower transaminase and improved overall condition of the patient. Treatments are lasting for 90 days, during which each one should take 3 g of royal jelly daily, in the morning, before eating. A 30-45 days break should follow, after which the administration of raw royal jelly can be resumed.

Anemia

Under the influence of raw royal jelly, there were an intensification of process of formation of red blood cells. Prospective studies have also shown that, taken in sufficient doses, this product helps eliminate morphological defects of red blood cells and prevents abnormal processes of their processes.
4-week courses are held, taking 2-5 grams of royal jelly every day (the amount increases with the severity of anemia).

Myopia, progressive nearsightedness

A study done in 2008 by prof. Dr. Jurate Jankauskiene, the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Kaunas, Lithuania, on 25 patients with myopia, demonstrated that the administration of royal jelly produces noticeable improvements in this condition. After 60 days of treatment, patients reported a better visual acuity and higher sensitivity to contrast.
Take 1 g of raw royal jelly, every day, for a period of 2-3 months.

Macular degeneration

Dr. Jurate Jankauskiene presented in a congress in Passau, a study demonstrating the effect of raw royal jelly in improving and even in stopping this disease, otherwise very difficult to treat. The visual acuity of the patients improved on average by 10 percent after only 30 days of treatment with RJ.
Take 1 g of raw royal jelly, every day, for a period of 2-3 months.

Type 2 diabetes

One of the most important uses of raw royal jelly is in this condition, which dramatically decreases insulin resistance in the body. Basically, under the action of this remedy, the pancreas is no longer “whipped” to secrete more insulin, we do not interfere with other external remedies in order to lower blood sugar (which would give a certain level of addiction), the body is simply helped to adjust to the insulin levels it has.
The treatment lasts for two months, taking 1-3 g per day, leading to significant decreases in blood glucose, the effect being kept for several weeks after treatment.

Another study with type 2 diabetes patients showed that “here was a significant decrease in mean difference of ApoB/ApoA-I in the RJ group compared with the placebo group (0.008 vs. 0.13; p<0.044), respectively.”. The study concluded that “RJ intake may have desirable effects on serum glucose, Apo-A-I concentrations and ApoB/ApoA-I ratios in people with type 2 diabetes.”
Patients were given 1 g of RJ 3 times a day for 8 weeks.

royal jelly is good for fertility and sexual dysfunctionsInfertility in men, Impotence

Raw royal jelly increases testosterone levels in the blood. A man should take 2 g of raw royal jelly per day, for a period of 90 days.

For reduced sperm motility (asthenospermia)

In a clinical trial published in 2008 in “International Journal of Gynecology & Obstretics”, dr. Abdelhafiz A. and J. Muhammad created a mixture of royal jelly and honey, mixed in proportion of 1: 2 and applied 5 ml (one teaspoon) intravaginal before intercourse for procreation.
The study was done on 99 couples who were divided into two groups: the first group used the mixture of honey and royal jelly, and the second group simply followed the standard procedures of intrauterine artificial insemination.

Unexpectedly, the two doctors improved the rate of fertilization by 8.1% compared to the classic procedure done in men suffering from asthenospermia.

Another study showed that: “consumption of Royal jelly has a significant effect on sperm count and motility. It seems where there is idiopathic azoospermia, oligospermia and asthenospermia, the use of royal jelly is very effective and a significant help in treatment of infertility.”

Infertility in women

It has been shown by studies of clinical and experimental medicine and that this remedy increases levels of luteinizing hormone in the blood (which helps ovulation), which is extremely useful for women experiencing amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, irregular periods, ovarian failure and so on.
Treatments last for 28 days, taking 1-2 g of royal jelly daily. It follows a break of another 28 days and then resume treatment, till you have done 6 courses of treatment. Undoubtedly, royal jelly is the best known natural remedy against female infertility.

Spontaneous abortion

Royal jelly increases levels of progesterone, the hormone that helps maintain pregnancy. With one month before procreation and in the first two months of pregnancy take one gram of royal jelly daily on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before the main meal.

Premature menopause

Make a treatment of three months and take raw royal jelly in progressive doses. In the first month take 1g per day in the second month 2 g per day and in the third month 4 g per day.
You must have 2 such treatments per year, both with a duration of three months and a minimum break of 30 days between them.

Lupus and other autoimmune conditions

Rheumatism (arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis)

Take 1-3 g of royal jelly day for 30-45 days. This remedy stimulates the adrenal glands to secrete cortisol with anti-inflammatory effect, stops the degenerative processes in the joints, promotes tissue repair cartilage in joints.

Fractures

On a period of 45 days, take 2g of raw royal jelly every day on an empty stomach. It stimulates callus formation (bone healing), accelerating the processes of bone recovery after fractures and shortening the healing period.

review on royal jelly

Contraindications:

If you do not known yourself to have an allergy to RJ, or other bee product, please try taking first a really small quantity. And increase it in time. Observe your reactions.

• The main precaution is in people allergic to bee products. Also, people who have general allergic predisposition will take very small amounts of RJ in the first three days of treatment (0.1 g), stopping the administration immediately if there were noticed symptoms such as oro-pharyngeal itching, digestive disorders, difficulty in breathing and hyper-secretion of mucus, rash.

• Asthma, together with, in some cases, anaphylaxis, was observed in seven subjects following ingestion of royal jelly. This study showed that symptoms of asthma and anaphylaxis seen in subjects following ingestion of royal jelly were true IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reactions. The clinical significance of the antibodies found in the sera of control subjects is not known but they may arise in response to common inhalant allergens that show allergenic cross-reactivity with royal jelly.
In this situations, it is advantageous to prepare hypoallergenic RJ by a protease enzyme treatment for its safe consumption. (study)

• Patients with asthma and similar respiratory diseases should not take, or take it only under the supervision of his/her medical doctor or apiterapist. In 1995 the Medical Journal of Australia reported five cases of asthma and anaphylaxis induced by royal jelly in patients with mild atopic asthma.
